5 Simple Steps for Home Organization: Keeping your Children Safe

Tip 1.
Being lethargic and day dreamy is a much more dangerous state-of-being than aware and alert. Healthy eating and enough sleep make a big difference on how our children function daily. Be aware of your child's sleep requirements and bedtime routine. Serve nutritious meals with high protein, vitamin-rich and whole grain foods. When preparing raw meats, fish or eggs it is important to clean work areas, sinks, faucets, utensils and your hands.

Tip 2. When skateboarding, skiing, ice-skating...protective equipment is a no-brainer. Helmets as well as knee, wrist and elbow pads limit the amount of serious injuries. Helmets are now sleek and "cool"; allowing your child to choose a color and decorate with decals or stickers makes their helmet special.

Tip 3. Although your children may be past the baby-proofing age, it is always a wise idea to keep cleaning chemicals and medications out of reach in case of accidental use. For example, over the counter medications that can be easily mistaken for candy.

Tip 4. We don't want to scare our children, but it is important to inform them of possible dangers. Discuss safety procedures; do not talk to strangers, what to do in a fire...Empower them to protect themselves and maintain open communication with their guardians.

Tip 5. Create kid-safe business cards. Having multiple cell numbers preprinted in their pockets adds security when travelling in a large group through airports or to amusement parks. Use heavyweight cards which can be laminated if necessary.
